What does Deuteronomy 32:17 mean?
Moses is warning the Israelites about a spiritual danger he sees ahead: turning away from the God who rescued them to worship other powers instead. When he says they sacrificed to "demons" and "new gods," he's describing what happens when people chase after anything that promises fulfillment outside of their relationship with God, whether that's actual idol worship or the modern equivalents of status, wealth, or approval. The phrase "which your fathers didn't dread" carries a particular sting, because it reminds them they're abandoning something their ancestors knew was real and worth protecting. It's a call to remember that choosing false gods, even shiny new ones that feel exciting and relevant, means turning away from what's actually trustworthy.
