Deuteronomy 31:29
“For I know that after my death you will utterly corrupt yourselves, and turn away from the way which I have commanded you; and evil will happen to you in the latter days; because you will do that which is evil in Yahweh’s sight, to provoke him to anger through the work of your hands.””
What does Deuteronomy 31:29 mean?
Moses speaks these words near the end of his life, knowing he won't be there to guide the people anymore. He's being honest about human nature: without faithful leadership and constant reminding, people tend to drift away from what they know is right, especially when no one is watching closely. What makes this verse sobering is that Moses isn't angry or condemning—he's simply stating what he's learned about how people work, and warning that turning from God's ways doesn't happen without real consequences. The "evil in the latter days" isn't punishment from a distant God, but the natural result of choices that pull us away from the source of genuine blessing.
