Deuteronomy 29:6
“You have not eaten bread, neither have you drunk wine or strong drink; that you may know that I am Yahweh your God.”
What does Deuteronomy 29:6 mean?
During the Israelites' forty years wandering in the desert, God sustained them miraculously without the ordinary provisions we'd expect them to need. Their clothes didn't wear out, their feet didn't swell, and they had manna to eat, yet they never had the settled, stable life where bread and wine would naturally be part of their routine. Moses reminds them of this unusual reality to help them recognize God's direct hand in their survival. This isn't about avoiding food and drink as some kind of spiritual practice, but rather about recognizing the difference between what you can provide for yourself and what only God can provide. When ordinary means fail but you're sustained anyway, it becomes undeniable that something beyond the natural world is at work. For the Israelites standing at the edge of entering the promised land, this memory was meant to anchor their trust: the God who kept them alive in impossible conditions would remain faithful to them ahead.
