Deuteronomy 29:17
“and you have seen their abominations, and their idols, wood and stone, silver and gold, which were among them);”
What does Deuteronomy 29:17 mean?
Moses is reminding the Israelites of something they witnessed firsthand: the grotesque idols and false gods surrounding them in Egypt and in the lands they'd passed through on their journey. These carved wooden figures, stone statues, and precious metal images represented everything opposite to worshiping the invisible God who had freed them. By calling them "abominations," Moses isn't just being critical, he's saying these idols are spiritually repulsive, designed to pull people away from truth. He mentions them right before calling the people to renew their covenant with God, essentially saying: "You've seen where that path leads, and you've seen where faithfulness to the real God leads. Choose wisely."
