What does Deuteronomy 28:47 mean?
This verse captures something we might not expect to find in a warning about curses: the idea that God actually desires our joy and gladness, not grim obedience. The fuller context shows Moses explaining that when people neglect God even while surrounded by blessing and plenty, they've missed the whole point of their relationship with him. There's something tender in this. God isn't pictured as a harsh taskmaster demanding reluctant service, but as someone who wants to be served joyfully, from a heart that's genuinely glad. When we're in a season of abundance or even just basic comfort, we have an opportunity to recognize the source of those good things and respond with gratitude rather than taking them for granted. The warning isn't really about God punishing bad attitudes, but about how we deprive ourselves when we fail to see and appreciate what's already been given to us.
