“Remember what Amalek did to you by the way as you came out of Egypt;”
What does Deuteronomy 25:17 mean?
When Israel fled Egypt as free people, the Amalekites attacked them from behind, targeting the weakest and most exhausted travelers. This command to "remember" wasn't about nursing grudges forever, but about learning a hard lesson: some people will prey on the vulnerable when given the chance, and communities need to stay alert and protect their own. Moses is essentially telling the Israelites not to forget how easily their enemies could have destroyed them when they were most defenseless, so they would remain vigilant and compassionate toward others in similar straits. It's a reminder that freedom requires courage and that abandoning caution can have real consequences.
