Deuteronomy 24:21
“When you harvest your vineyard, you shall not glean it after yourselves. It shall be for the foreigner, for the fatherless, and for the widow.”
What does Deuteronomy 24:21 mean?
God is instructing the Israelites not to squeeze every last grape from their vines after the main harvest, but instead to leave the remainder for people in desperate need. This practice acknowledged that vulnerable people, the foreigner, orphan, and widow, often had no land or resources of their own and depended on the generosity of those with means. By making this a law rather than leaving it to chance or feeling, God was building care for the marginalized into the everyday rhythm of community life.
