Deuteronomy 23:25
“When you come into your neighbor’s standing grain, then you may pluck the ears with your hand; but you shall not move a sickle to your neighbor’s standing grain.”
What does Deuteronomy 23:25 mean?
When people were traveling through someone else's fields, they were allowed to pick enough grain by hand to eat right then and there, but they couldn't harvest it on a larger scale with a tool like a sickle. It's a law that recognizes both the hunger of a traveler and the rights of the person who planted and tends the field. This shows a kind of neighborly balance: generosity toward those passing through, but respect for the work and livelihood of the owner. You can take what you need for immediate sustenance, but you can't take advantage of someone else's labor or property for profit.
