What does Deuteronomy 22:18 mean?
When a man falsely accuses his wife of not being a virgin at marriage (the charge addressed in the verses just before), the community elders are tasked with punishing him for the lie. This reflects an ancient legal system where local leaders had the responsibility to uphold justice and protect people from malicious false claims that could destroy a woman's reputation and life. The punishment itself was meant to be proportional and public, serving both as correction for the man and as validation that the woman's honor had been defended. In a society where a woman's social standing was deeply tied to such matters, this law provided her actual legal recourse against false testimony, which was no small protection.
