What does Deuteronomy 20:18 mean?
When Israel was about to enter the promised land, Moses warned them that keeping the people who lived there would be spiritually dangerous, not just militarily risky. The concern wasn't really about military tactics—it was that living alongside people who practiced very different kinds of worship would gradually pull them away from their covenant with God. It's the same warning we see throughout the Bible: when we're constantly around practices and values that contradict our faith, we tend to drift toward them without quite realizing it. This verse reminds us that our spiritual commitments aren't as automatic or unshakeable as we might hope, and that sometimes the people we surround ourselves with genuinely shape what we believe and do, for better or worse.
