What does Deuteronomy 2:1 mean?
After Israel's earlier defeat at Kadesh, God redirected the people away from their direct route to the promised land and into a longer, harder journey through the wilderness. This wasn't punishment alone, but a necessary season of waiting and wandering while a generation that had rejected God's promises was given time to pass away. The detour around Mount Seir (the land of Edom) meant the Israelites had to trust God's timing rather than their own sense of urgency. Sometimes obedience looks like accepting the longer road and the delays we don't understand, knowing that God's way, even when circuitous, is ultimately leading us somewhere worth going.
