Deuteronomy 19:15
“One witness shall not rise up against a man for any iniquity, or for any sin, in any sin that he sins. At the mouth of two witnesses, or at the mouth of three witnesses, shall a matter be established.”
What does Deuteronomy 19:15 mean?
When someone faces serious accusation, a single person's word alone isn't enough to convict them. This law required at least two or three witnesses to testify about the same wrongdoing before judgment could be rendered. The principle protects people from being condemned on mere hearsay or the grudge of one accuser. This mattered enormously in ancient Israel's justice system, where there were no forensic tools or written records like we might have today. Multiple witnesses provided the only reliable way to establish what actually happened. The rule reflects a deep concern that justice shouldn't rest on one person's possibly mistaken or malicious account, but rather on corroborating evidence. It's a safeguard built into the system itself, acknowledging our human tendency to misremember, misinterpret, or lie.
