Deuteronomy 18:12
“For whoever does these things is an abomination to Yahweh. Because of these abominations, Yahweh your God drives them out from before you.”
What does Deuteronomy 18:12 mean?
This passage is part of Moses' instruction to the Israelites about practices they should avoid, particularly divination, sorcery, and consulting with the dead. The strong language—"abomination"—reflects how seriously God took these practices, which were common in the surrounding cultures and often led people away from trusting God directly. The second sentence explains the practical consequence: God was removing the peoples already in Canaan partly because of their involvement in these forbidden practices. This wasn't arbitrary punishment but reflected a fundamental truth—that turning to other sources for guidance and spiritual power, rather than to God, corrupts a society and its relationship with him. For the Israelites, the warning was clear: don't adopt the very practices that led to the destruction of those who came before you.
