Deuteronomy 17:16

Only he shall not multiply horses to himself, nor cause the people to return to Egypt, to the end that he may multiply horses; because Yahweh has said to you, “You shall not go back that way again.”

What does Deuteronomy 17:16 mean?

This instruction warns Israel's future kings against building up massive horse armies, which was how ancient powers typically showed military strength and dominance. The warning includes something deeper: don't trust in military might so much that you'd be willing to return to Egypt (where Israel was enslaved) seeking horses and security the old way. God is essentially saying, "You're free now. Don't slip back into depending on the world's methods of power instead of trusting me." For any leader, this speaks to the danger of chasing impressive resources or status at the expense of your actual values and your dependence on God.
