Deuteronomy 16:21
“You shall not plant for yourselves an Asherah of any kind of tree beside Yahweh your God’s altar, which you shall make for yourselves.”
What does Deuteronomy 16:21 mean?
God is drawing a clear line between true worship and the religious practices of the surrounding cultures. Asherah poles were wooden symbols used in fertility religions that were common in Canaan, and planting one near God's altar would have mixed His worship with these other beliefs. The instruction isn't really about trees themselves, but about keeping your devotion undivided and refusing to blend what you claim to believe with competing spiritual influences.
