Deuteronomy 15:19
“You shall dedicate all the firstborn males that are born of your herd and of your flock to Yahweh your God. You shall do no work with the firstborn of your herd, nor shear the firstborn of your flock.”
What does Deuteronomy 15:19 mean?
In ancient Israel, the firstborn animals were considered specially belonging to God, so they were set apart from ordinary use. This meant they couldn't be put to work like regular animals or harvested for their wool, which made keeping them a real sacrifice for a farming family. The practice reflected gratitude to God and trust that he would provide even when people set aside their best resources. For us today, this speaks to the idea of honoring God with what matters most to us, not just with leftovers or what's convenient.
