Deuteronomy 15:11
“For the poor will never cease out of the land. Therefore I command you to surely open your hand to your brother, to your needy, and to your poor, in your land.”
What does Deuteronomy 15:11 mean?
Moses is being realistic here: poverty isn't a problem that will ever be completely solved, so God doesn't want His people waiting for that day to show generosity. Instead, He's calling them to open their hands *now*, to the people struggling right beside them. This isn't about guilt or obligation born from failure, but rather recognition that need is constant and our response should be constant too. The command to "surely open your hand" suggests something deliberate and whole-hearted, not grudging or minimal, because generosity toward those nearby is woven into what it means to belong to God's community.
