What does Deuteronomy 14:4 mean?

This passage introduces Israel's food laws by listing animals considered clean and acceptable to eat. The list continues beyond these three (including certain deer and gazelles), and the principle is that of cloven-hoofed animals that chew the cud. For ancient Israel, these regulations weren't arbitrary but shaped their identity as God's people and their daily practice of obedience. Even in something as ordinary as eating, they were reminded that they belonged to God and that he cared about how they lived. Today, whether or not we follow these specific rules, the underlying message invites us to think about how our choices, down to the smallest details, can reflect our values and our relationship with God.
