Deuteronomy 14:26
“You shall trade the money for whatever your soul desires, for cattle, or for sheep, or for wine, or for strong drink, or for whatever your soul asks of you; and you shall eat there before Yahweh your God, and you shall rejoice, you and your household.”
What does Deuteronomy 14:26 mean?
God is telling the Israelites that when they bring their tithe (a portion of their harvest or earnings) to the temple, they can convert it into money and then spend it on whatever they genuinely want, whether that's meat, wine, or anything else that brings them joy. The point isn't to deny yourself or perform grim obedience, but to celebrate together with your family before God, treating this as a festive meal where enjoyment is part of the worship itself. This reflects something beautiful about God's design: genuine gratitude and worship can include pleasure and delight. The command to "rejoice" isn't added as an afterthought, it's central to what God wants.
