What does Deuteronomy 14:11 mean?
After listing specific birds that were forbidden in the previous verses, Moses here gives permission to eat the clean birds, meaning those that met the dietary laws God had established for Israel. This was part of the holiness code that set the Israelite community apart and reminded them daily through their meals that they belonged to God. For ancient Israel, these guidelines weren't arbitrary restrictions but spiritual practices that connected eating to faith. While many Christians today don't follow these specific dietary laws (Jesus declared all foods clean in Mark 7), the principle behind them still speaks: what we consume and how we live can be conscious choices that reflect our values and our commitment to something larger than ourselves.
