Deuteronomy 12:8
“You shall not do all the things that we do here today, every man whatever is right in his own eyes;”
What does Deuteronomy 12:8 mean?
Here Moses is telling the Israelites that once they settle in the promised land, they can't just worship however they feel like. During their wilderness wandering, worship was more spontaneous and scattered, but God is about to give them a unified way of life centered on one sanctuary. He's saying that personal preference or convenience can't be the measure of what's right when you're part of a covenant community. This doesn't mean individual conscience doesn't matter, but it does mean we're called to something larger than our own sense of what works for us—we're accountable to God's standards and to one another. It's a good reminder for anyone in community, whether church or otherwise, that being part of something meaningful sometimes means surrendering the "just whatever feels right to me" approach.
