Deuteronomy 12:17
“You may not eat within your gates the tithe of your grain, or of your new wine, or of your oil, or the firstborn of your herd or of your flock, nor any of your vows which you vow, nor your freewill offerings, nor the wave offering of your hand;”
What does Deuteronomy 12:17 mean?
God is telling the Israelites that certain sacred gifts and offerings can't be eaten casually at home, but must be brought to the place where God's presence dwells (the central sanctuary). This was a way of keeping worship intentional and communal rather than letting it become routine or separated from God's house. The tithe, firstfruits, and votive gifts mentioned here weren't meant to be private family meals. They were part of a covenant relationship with God that required traveling to worship together and sharing these meals in a sacred setting. For people in hard seasons, this principle still speaks to the value of not letting our commitments to God become isolated or forgotten in our everyday routines.
