Deuteronomy 10:3
“So I made an ark of acacia wood, and cut two stone tablets like the first, and went up onto the mountain, having the two tablets in my hand.”
What does Deuteronomy 10:3 mean?
Moses is describing how God asked him to create a replacement for the stone tablets he had shattered in anger when he first came down from Mount Sinai and saw the people worshiping a golden calf. This time, after God had renewed His covenant with Israel despite their failure, Moses carved new tablets himself and brought them up the mountain to receive God's law a second time. What's moving here is that this represents a second chance, not just for the tablets but for the whole relationship between God and His people. Even after breaking God's law and His messenger's trust, there was still a path forward. The fact that Moses had to do the physical work of making the ark and tablets himself (while God provided the covenant words) shows both human responsibility and divine grace working together.
