What does Deuteronomy 1:46 mean?

After the Israelites lost their courage to enter the promised land, they settled in Kadesh, and that's where they waited. This verse marks a pause in the story, a season of consequences where an entire generation had to live out the results of their fear and disobedience. The repetition here ("many days, according to the days that you remained") emphasizes how long they lingered in that place, neither moving forward nor returning home. It's a reminder that sometimes our hesitation or doubt can create seasons of waiting that feel long and uncertain, but even in those difficult stretches, we're still in God's story.
