What does Deuteronomy 1:28 mean?
Here the Israelites are expressing their fear before entering Canaan, repeating the discouraging report that scouts brought back. The people are so overwhelmed by what they've heard, they're questioning whether this journey even makes sense, and their courage has completely dissolved. What makes this moment poignant is that their fear isn't entirely irrational, the Canaanites really were a formidable obstacle, but their focus on the obstacles has completely overshadowed their trust in God's promise. When we're afraid, we tend to magnify what we're facing and minimize what we've already been given, and that's the real struggle here. The verse captures that universal human moment when doubt spreads like wildfire through a community and suddenly the impossible seems not just difficult but laughably beyond reach.
