What does Daniel 9:9 mean?
Daniel is confessing sin on behalf of his entire nation, acknowledging that God's character is fundamentally marked by compassion and the willingness to let go of wrongdoing. Even though the people of Judah have turned away from God and broken covenant with him, Daniel recognizes that forgiveness itself is something that flows from God's very nature, not something that has to be earned or that God reluctantly offers. This prayer comes during a dark time when Jerusalem lies in ruins and the people are in exile. By naming both rebellion and mercy in the same breath, Daniel isn't making excuses for disobedience, but he's also not despairing. He's anchoring hope in what he knows to be true about who God is, which opens the door for genuine repentance and restoration.
