I heard a man’s voice between the banks of the Ulai, which called, and said, “Gabriel, make this man understand the vision.”

What does Daniel 8:16 mean?

Daniel has just witnessed a frightening vision of cosmic conflict, and he's overwhelmed and confused. Someone calls out across the river Ulai, summoning Gabriel by name and asking the angel to help Daniel grasp what he's just seen. It's a moment of divine care breaking into bewilderment, where God sends help specifically suited to Daniel's need. This shows us something tender about how God works: he doesn't leave us to untangle impossible mysteries alone. When we're genuinely seeking to understand something that matters spiritually, God provides clarity through his messengers. For Daniel, that meant an angel who would patiently explain the strange symbols and their meaning. For us today, it might look like a wise friend, a pastor, a passage that suddenly makes sense, or the Holy Spirit's quiet nudging toward truth.
