What does Daniel 5:1 mean?

King Belshazzar threw an extravagant party for his nobles, and he was drinking heavily right alongside them. The size and scale of this gathering tells you something about his confidence and power, but it also sets the stage for what's about to happen. When leaders surround themselves with yes-men and lose their sense of restraint, they often miss what's coming. By the end of this chapter, Belshazzar will encounter something so terrifying that no amount of wine or royal authority can protect him, and his entire kingdom will shift hands. This opening moment captures a man at the height of earthly comfort, completely unaware that his world is about to be turned upside down.
