What does Daniel 4:13 mean?

King Nebuchadnezzar is describing a troubling dream he's had, and in it he encounters a mysterious divine messenger. The word "watcher" was used in ancient Near Eastern literature to describe heavenly beings who observe human affairs and carry out God's purposes. This wasn't just any dream to Nebuchadnezzar, the great Babylonian king, but one so vivid and unsettling that he needed his wisest advisors to interpret it. The arrival of this figure from heaven signals that God is about to communicate something important about the king's future, something that would ultimately humble him and teach him to recognize God's authority over all earthly power. For those of us reading this centuries later, it's a reminder that God sometimes interrupts our ordinary lives with messages we can't ignore, even when we're not expecting them.
