What does Daniel 3:9 mean?

This is the opening of a response from King Nebuchadnezzar's officials, and it shows the formal, deferential way people addressed powerful rulers in ancient Babylon. The phrase "live forever" wasn't literal—it was a standard greeting meant to show respect and loyalty, much like how we might say "Your Majesty" today. In this moment, the officials are about to inform the king that some of his appointed officials (Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego) have refused to bow to his golden statue, which puts them in serious danger. The respectful tone here makes the contrast even sharper: these officials are about to deliver news the king won't want to hear, and they're taking care to honor him even as they bring unwelcome information.
