What does Daniel 1:14 mean?

After Daniel and his friends asked to eat only vegetables and water instead of the royal food, the guard agreed to give their request a chance. He set a ten-day trial period to see whether this simple diet would actually harm them or leave them looking worse than the other young men eating the king's rich meals. It's a moment of compassion meeting reasonable doubt, where someone in a position of power chooses to listen rather than simply enforce the rules. The guard was willing to risk a little to accommodate their convictions, which opened the door for God to work in a remarkable way.
