What does Daniel 1:11 mean?

Daniel is addressing the official in charge of his care and that of his three companions. This moment comes early in their exile in Babylon, when these young men are being trained in the king's court and are about to make a request that matters deeply to them. What follows this verse shows Daniel respectfully asking to eat differently from the royal food, which would help him and his friends stay faithful to their Jewish dietary laws. The respectful tone here, speaking directly and personally to the steward rather than going around him or demanding anything, sets the pattern for how Daniel handles difficult situations throughout his life: with integrity, but also with wisdom about how to approach those in authority.
