What does Amos 8:5 mean?
The prophet Amos is exposing the hearts of merchants who observe religious holidays only as inconvenient interruptions to their business. These traders can't wait for the new moon festival and Sabbath to end so they can get back to cheating their customers, using smaller measures to shortchange people while charging full price and rigging their scales. What makes this so cutting is that Amos reveals they haven't internalized the values those holy days were meant to teach—honesty, rest, and justice. He's saying that genuine faith isn't compatible with deliberately deceiving vulnerable people, and God sees right through the gap between our religious practices and the way we actually treat others.
