What does Amos 7:14 mean?
Amos is defending himself against a priest who's just told him to stop prophesying and go back home. What's striking is his honesty: he wasn't trained in a prophet's school or born into a prophetic family, and he didn't choose this calling because he was ambitious or looking for status. He was simply doing ordinary work, taking care of animals and tending fig trees, when God called him to speak truth. His point is that he's not doing this for money, power, or professional advancement, but because God compelled him to speak. It's a quiet statement of integrity from someone who gave up a humble livelihood to deliver an uncomfortable message nobody wanted to hear.
