What does Amos 3:12 mean?
When a lion attacks a flock, a shepherd might manage to recover only scraps, a couple of legs or a torn ear, from the predator's mouth. That's the bleak picture Amos uses here to describe what's coming for Israel's wealthy and comfortable people in Samaria. Those who lounge on fancy couches and silk cushions, living luxuriously while ignoring injustice and God's warnings, won't escape calamity intact. They'll survive, but barely, and only as fragments of what they were. The message cuts through their complacency: privilege and comfort can't protect you from the consequences of turning away from God and mistreating others.
