What does Acts 8:22 mean?
Peter speaks these words to Simon, a magician who had tried to buy spiritual power with money, hoping to gain prestige and control. The invitation here is surprisingly gentle: Peter isn't condemning Simon to punishment, but offering him a real path forward if he's willing to change direction. The core of repentance isn't self-loathing or performing penance, but a genuine turning around of your heart and intentions. Peter acknowledges that forgiveness isn't guaranteed (notice "if perhaps"), which keeps this honest, but he also makes clear that asking God for it is always worth doing. When you recognize that your motivations or actions have gone wrong, asking for forgiveness while truly intending to change is how you step back into relationship with God.
