Acts 7:51
““You stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, you always resist the Holy Spirit! As your fathers did, so you do.”
What does Acts 7:51 mean?
Stephen is calling out the religious leaders who are rejecting his message about Jesus, using language that would have stung deeply in Jewish culture. "Stiff-necked" was an old way of describing stubborn resistance to God (going back to the wilderness wanderings), and "uncircumcised in heart and ears" means their inner selves and their ability to hear God's truth have closed off, despite their outward religious practices. He's not saying they're uniquely sinful, but rather that they're following a pattern their ancestors established: refusing to listen when God sends messengers they don't expect or want to hear from. It's a hard word, but it comes from a place of grief that people are turning away from what Stephen believes is God's fulfillment of their own scriptures.
