“But Peter asked her, “How is it that you have agreed together to tempt the Spirit of the Lord? Behold, the feet of those who have buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out.””
What does Acts 5:9 mean?
Peter is confronting Ananias's wife, Sapphira, about a lie she and her husband made together. They had sold property and pretended to give all the money to the church while secretly keeping some for themselves, which wasn't wrong in itself, but lying about their generosity was. When Peter speaks of tempting the Spirit of the Lord, he means they're testing God's patience and trying to deceive him, as if God wouldn't notice their dishonesty. The hard truth Peter delivers is immediate: those who just buried her husband are about to arrive to do the same for her.
