What does Acts 3:5 mean?

A beggar at the temple gate had become so accustomed to asking for money that when Peter and John approached, he immediately perked up, hoping they'd give him a coin. His expectation was shaped entirely by his daily experience, poverty, and what he'd learned to hope for from passersby. In just a moment, Peter would tell him he had something far more valuable than silver, but first we see the beggar as he was, with his reasonable but limited expectations about what these strangers might offer him.
