Acts 23:9
“A great clamor arose, and some of the scribes of the Pharisees’ part stood up, and contended, saying, “We find no evil in this man. But if a spirit or angel has spoken to him, let’s not fight against God!””
What does Acts 23:9 mean?
When Paul is brought before the Jewish council, he cleverly mentions his belief in resurrection, which immediately divides the room. The Pharisees (who believed in resurrection) and Sadducees (who didn't) start arguing fiercely about theology instead of focusing on Paul's arrest. Some Pharisee scribes actually defend Paul here, recognizing that if he's had a genuine encounter with God, opposing him would be opposing God himself. This moment reveals something both comforting and human: even in hostile situations, God can create unexpected allies, and people will sometimes choose what seems right over what's convenient. It's a reminder that God can work through disagreements and unlikely circumstances to protect his people.
