What does Acts 23:4 mean?
Paul had just called the high priest a "whitewashed wall," speaking out of anger during his trial before the Jewish council. The bystanders were shocked, not because they disagreed with Paul's assessment of the priest's character, but because insulting someone in such a high religious position was seen as deeply disrespectful, even blasphemous in their culture. Their question is a rebuke: How dare you speak that way about God's appointed leader?
