Acts 20:28
“Take heed, therefore, to yourselves, and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the assembly of the Lord and God which he purchased with his own blood.”
What does Acts 20:28 mean?
Paul is reminding church leaders that their role as shepherds comes directly from God, not from human appointment or personal ambition. The image of a flock needing care captures what spiritual leadership really is: watching over people with tenderness and responsibility, especially protecting them from harm. The phrase "purchased with his own blood" grounds everything in Jesus' sacrifice. Leaders aren't overseers because they're the smartest or most impressive, but because God bought this community at great cost and entrusted it to their care. This is meant to humble leaders and clarify their purpose: they answer to God, not to themselves, and the people in their care matter infinitely because Christ valued them enough to die for them.
