What does Acts 2:40 mean?

Peter is wrapping up his very first sermon on Pentecost, the day the Holy Spirit arrived and the church was born. After explaining who Jesus was and what his death and resurrection meant, Peter makes a direct appeal: get away from the worldview and moral corruption of your current culture and turn toward God instead. The "crooked generation" doesn't mean Peter thought every individual around him was evil, but rather that the prevailing attitudes of Jerusalem at that time were fundamentally opposed to God's truth. He's saying that following Jesus means making a conscious choice to step away from what everyone else accepts as normal and to orient your life differently. This is a bracing call to real commitment, not just agreement with nice ideas. It's worth noting that Peter himself had been terrified just weeks earlier, hiding behind locked doors. His boldness here comes from being filled with the Holy Spirit, and he extends that same possibility to everyone listening. The invitation remains the same for us: you have agency in this moment to choose differently, to reject what harms you and choose what leads to real life.
