Acts 2:24
“whom God raised up, having freed him from the agony of death, because it was not possible that he should be held by it.”
What does Acts 2:24 mean?
This verse speaks of Jesus's resurrection as God's undoing of death's grip on him. The "agony of death" captures both the physical suffering of crucifixion and the deeper spiritual reality that death itself—humanity's greatest enemy—had seized him. The phrase "it was not possible that he should be held by it" isn't about physical strength but about God's nature and power: death simply cannot keep its hold on the one who is life itself. For those in the early church hearing this (and for us), it meant death had been decisively defeated, not just postponed. If death couldn't hold Jesus, it doesn't have the final word over those who belong to him either.
