What does Acts 18:16 mean?
Gallio, the Roman proconsul of Achaia, had just refused to hear the Jewish leaders' case against Paul, declaring it a matter of their own law rather than Roman concern. This dismissal wasn't gentle: he literally drove them away from his official seat of judgment, making a public show of his rejection. What might seem like a small moment actually protected Paul from legal persecution, since Roman authorities were far more powerful than local opposition. Sometimes the most helpful thing someone in power can do is simply refuse to entertain accusations, leaving us free to continue our work.
