What does Acts 17:1 mean?
Paul and his companions were traveling through Macedonia on what would become one of the most important missionary journeys of the early church. After moving through a couple of smaller cities, they arrived in Thessalonica, a major port city and cultural hub where Jewish people had established a synagogue. Luke mentions the synagogue because it was Paul's custom to enter these gathering places first, where he could speak to both Jews and Greek converts already familiar with the Hebrew scriptures. This simple detail about their travels reminds us that the gospel spread through real people moving along real roads, stopping in real towns, and seeking out communities where they could share their faith.
