Acts 12:7
“And behold, an angel of the Lord stood by him, and a light shone in the cell. He struck Peter on the side, and woke him up, saying, “Stand up quickly!” His chains fell off from his hands.”
What does Acts 12:7 mean?
Peter was imprisoned by King Herod and sleeping in chains, probably resigned to his fate, when God broke into that darkness with sudden, unmistakable action. An angel appeared with light and physically roused him, commanding him to get up—and as Peter obeyed, his chains simply fell away. This moment captures something beautiful about how God works: he doesn't ask us to escape our own impossible situations, but he does meet us right where we are and makes a way where there seems to be none. Sometimes freedom comes not through our own effort, but through trusting God's interruption into our despair.
