Acts 11:9
“But a voice answered me the second time out of heaven, ‘What God has cleansed, don’t you call unclean.’”
What does Acts 11:9 mean?
Peter is describing a vision he received where God showed him animals considered ritually unclean under Jewish law, then told him to eat them. When Peter hesitated (saying he'd never eaten anything unclean), God repeated this message: what He has made clean is clean, period. God wasn't really changing the food laws in that moment, though, which becomes clear when you read the fuller story. Peter soon understands that God is speaking spiritually about people, not just food, telling him that gentiles (non-Jews) are no longer separated from God's people by the old boundaries. This vision broke down a major barrier in the early church and showed that God's welcome was expanding far beyond what people expected. It's a powerful reminder that God sometimes challenges our inherited assumptions about who belongs and who doesn't.
