I also heard a voice saying to me, ‘Rise, Peter, kill and eat!’

What does Acts 11:7 mean?

Peter is recounting a vision he had where God told him to eat animals that Jewish law considered unclean. This was deeply shocking to Peter, who had followed those dietary rules his whole life and saw them as part of his faithfulness to God. The voice and the command were God's way of preparing Peter's heart to accept non-Jewish people into the church, since he was about to meet a Roman centurion named Cornelius. Sometimes God asks us to release old certainties and practices because his love extends further than we imagined, and that can feel startling and uncomfortable at first.
