“I had many things to write to you, but I am unwilling to write to you with ink and pen;”
What does 3 John 1:13 mean?
John is wrapping up his letter by acknowledging there's so much more he could say, but he's choosing to stop here. In the ancient world, writing by hand with ink and pen was slow and laborious, so this wasn't just about convenience, it was genuinely time-consuming work. What matters most to John is that he's already shared the essential encouragement in these few verses, and he hints that deeper conversation might be better saved for a face-to-face visit (which he mentions in the next verse).
